Pterodactyls are cool! Here's a simple activity for preschoolers to build one from wood blocks. Recently we were at a museum with our grandchildren looking at some dinosaur skeletons. A museum staff member asked my 5 year old grandson what was his favorite dinosaur. He gladly responded "Pterodactyls". She quickly commented in a not so patient manner, "Well that can't be your favorite dinosaur because pterodactyls aren't dinosaurs! They are flying reptiles."

My little grandson seemed pretty disappointed. Kind of like finding out the truth about the Santa or the Tooth Fairy. But we convinced him that pterodactyls are still the coolest! I mean they are huge. They have wingspans like an airplane and besides, their skeletons were right there in the dinosaur section of the museum.

Maybe pterodactyls are your favorite "dinosaur" too. Here's a fun project, simple enough for young kids, to recreate this big cool "flying reptile." And a word to all museum staff, educating people is great, but maybe you could tell the next 5 year old how his favorite dinosaur is so awesome that we call him a flying reptile. Then explain what makes the difference. Because whether they are a flying reptile or a dinosaur, pterodactyls are the coolest! So build one with your blocks!
